I made Dune Drama at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan, between Silver Lake to the east and Lake Michigan to the west. It was a September morning, and dramatic clouds were moving across the sky. Using a deep 910nm infrared filter, I wanted to bring attention to the cloud formations while transforming the familiar dune landscape.
In the black-and-white photograph, a lone tree and low dune plants stand against wide stretches of pale sand. The infrared rendering gives the vegetation and dunes an otherworldly presence, while the cloud-filled sky supplies contrast and movement. The scene feels both open and grounded, with the small forms on the sand set beneath the expansive sky.
Infrared photography changes how we read a landscape—it asks us to pause and look beyond its everyday colors. Here, it lets me share not only what I saw, but the unusual atmosphere I felt in that moment. I hope this view of Michigan’s shoreline offers a quiet invitation to slow down, look deeper, and find your own connection in the details.
